Heritage were asked on behalf on the Churches Conservation Trust to host a training day at St Peters Church in Gamston. Heritage set up different tables to enable the public to take part in talks and have a go at different aspects of construction including stonemasonry, lime pointing, lime plastering, glazing and Lead Work. Talks were given by Heritage Staff on the different trades.
The day started off with an introduction of the site works to all the members of staff that had traveled up from London to attend. We then carried out an example of lime slaking to show the CCT visitors what is involved in the production of lime before it is ready to use in pointing/re-plastering mixes.
After lunch it was a chance for the guests to get hands on with some stone lettering, lime pointing, lead welding and cutting of glass. Hard hat tours were also carried out to show people the work in progress of the site.
The day was a great success and another open day has been scheduled for the 21st July for members of the public to come and see what work is being carried out on the Church at Present.
